House A was a winner in the 2017 Victorian Architecture Awards, in the Residential Architecture – Houses (New) category.
Designed by Andrew Walter, House A subtly responded to a sloping block in Melbourne’s inner north, creating the sense of a country escape.
Timber plays a significant role, both externally & internally. Rough sawn Stringy Bark, straight from the mill, clads the house, with a triple black stain finish. The windows, most floor to above ceiling, were custom built on site. The same external cladding continues inside, in dressed form, to clad walls & to screen the stair. American Oak floors then compliment the Australian hardwoods.
Lygon St. Nursery’s landscaping further ties the house to the sloping block.
